My Heart Belongs to Daddy (Lolita)
Artist: One Ton
Album: Abnormal Pleasures
Year: 2002
♥: Alright, well, like I mentioned to you earlier I am having a hell of a time pulling myself out of my SIXTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL OBSESSION with These Kids Wear Crowns. I almost wish THEY were one hit wonders so I could post something by them because I haven't listened to anything else since Saturday slash am all giddy over the lead singer like a CRAZY PERSON. But in the name of our fabulous community, I've put aside the dancepunk to commemorate a time when I was, you know, actually sixteen. And share some, cough, objectively quality music. Hah. hahaha.
Ah, the summer of 2002. I was preparing for my last year of high school, carefree and spending the majority of the time in remote cabins with various family and/or friends. As I'm sure you remember, back when Virgin Radio was Mix 96 and they didn't play solely popular music released in the past few months (!! those were the days), they often took a chance on local bands, such as One Ton [I think they're from Quebec City]. Sometimes, these local bands took off (sidebar: one of my dad's artists still gets played on Montreal radio thanks to the Mix!), and in general there was a lot of pop variety. However, whenever I returned to civilization in summer '02, there was one. song. on the radio.
It's not this one, but it's by the same artist. You will remember it, perhaps, as a Spanish-influenced ditty with one verse repeated ad infinitum, and a chorus that went something like..."Super sex world going up and down!"
OH YEAH.
Oh yeah.
SuperSexWorld might be irritating, and it really defines a one hit wonder -- epic and fairly ridiculous song played NONSTOP, contained in its time, and a band that went absolutely nowhere afterwards...but I
I'm sharing this particular song not because it's my favourite of theirs (though it is fabulous), or because it references Lolita (though this song may actually be the first time I heard of the book), but because it's a) an amazing summer song and b) a good example of how fickle the whole 'one hit wonder' thing can be. One Ton wasn't only a good group, they were interesting. The entire album is full of weirdly 50s/Latin/lounge/jazz/altsynth strangeness, and they didn't really get a chance to expand on that. My Heart Belongs to Daddy is really messed up, musically and conceptually, but somehow it works. This is one of those bands that would have really hit their stride in the third album, and it didn't get to happen, for whatever reason -- be it their choice, or their fickle audience's.
Either way -- before I go paint my room to this album (...if I can resist the dancepunk), I'm lifting a glass of wine to all the bands who never got a chance to develop because they got stuck in the image they projected with the first song. All the best, One Ton -- thanks for some fabulous summer nights!
