Symphony in White, No. 2
Sun Airway
Soft Fall
2012
On the packed-with-bodies 105, pressed up against other people's down-filled winter coats, my arm at an impossible angle, grasping the rail overhead with all of the strength I can muster, eyes closed to make it seem like we are moving faster. Just when the heat started to feel unbearable and I began to question why I had even bothered to leave my apartment at all--this song came up on shuffle. It was a sonic wave of calm that spread through my body, a voice saying, "You wanted to be swept away."
I like when a song surprises me the way this one did. Stirring strings suddenly paired with a disco beat. Lines like, "Nevermind your cliff-framed youth" and "Spent time as octaves/Out of line, but still in tune." I initially downloaded Soft Fall because of the album art and haven't really given it much time since. Maybe that's the way it was supposed to be, because "Symphony in White, No. 2" came at the exact moment I needed it.
